This course is for advanced readers who need an age appropriate reading challenge. We will read and discuss The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, which has a Lexile level of 1000 due to its complex vocabulary and sentence structure.

Advanced Level
This course is for young students who are advanced readers. It is very challenging to find appropriate reading material that can push a young, advanced reader to become even better at reading and comprehension. Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth" is an excellent novel for doing just that. This book is goofy and fun, which appeals to readers of all ages. It doesn't contain any intense violence (there is one small scuffle), there aren't any swear words, and there isn't a focus on romance....
Students will - increase their vocabulary. - read and comprehend a high Lexile novel. - discuss characters, events, and predictions about the text. - read aloud to build fluency. - learn about many commonly used idioms.
I am a licensed English teacher for students in grades 5-12. I spent 4 years teaching in a public school classroom as a middle school English teacher. I absolutely love the book "The Phantom Tollbooth," and I have always enjoyed sharing it with new students!

"The Phantom Tollbooth" does not contain much for upsetting content. There is one little scuffle between two bugs. There are monsters that chase the main characters, but they never catch up. We will talk through these words in class, but students can practice between classes with the Quizlet links.
