Class Experience

What is the first feature you notice when you look at someone's face? Most likely it is their eyes! Well, this applies to art as well. The eyes can be the most important feature of a piece of art! That's why I am so excited to teach my students how to draw and shade realistic eyes.
In this class, students will learn the basic proportions of the size and spacing of eyes. Then we will discuss how shadows and light perspective effect the shading of eyes. Each student will have the opportunity to use their own level of skills to create a piece of art that they can be proud of. While this class is designed for more intermediate drawing students, I have created it to be accommodating for students who have either little experience, or who are more advanced. Students will start with the basics, and then they can keep building on that to create more detail. And of course, I do not expect perfection! This will be a fun, interactive class where I will be sketching right along with my students. I strongly promote an environment where we can laugh at our own mistakes and keep learning and practicing!
Learners will need a pencil, blank paper (preferably sketching paper), a good eraser, and a straight edge to trace (a ruler or piece of paper folded in half).

I am a self-taught professional artist, specializing in oil portrait paintings. I believe that art is about self expression and learning, and I hope to create a fun, interactive environment where students can develop a love for art while building their confidence in a new skill.

I am a professional artist, specializing in oil portrait paintings, and I have had the privilege of displaying my artwork in venues across the country. I believe that art is about self expression and learning, and I hope to create a fun, interactive environment where students can develop a love for art while building their confidence in a new skill.
I have always struggled with expecting “perfection” of myself, especially in my art, so I am constantly reminding my students, as well as myself, that perfection is not required, and that practice, not unreasonable expectations, is what a advances our skills.
My joy in teaching comes from the comments of my students and their parents, expressing that they created something they didn’t know was possible.
