Advanced Level
In this 4 lesson class we will be exploring higher levels of drawing. We will be doing exercises to help improve drawing skills, as well as creating great artwork. Students will create sketches and one drawing project a week. The class will be fun and will give students freedom in the subject matter that they chose to draw. Drawing experience is necessary (and I have Beginning Drawing and Intermediate Drawing self paced classes if you think you want to try those first), but we will take everything step by step! The lessons in this class will include: Large Scale Still life Drawing, Self Portraits, Drawing on Toned Paper, and Lighting & Using Unconventional Ways to Achieve Creative Drawings. We will also have drawing exercises to help with observational and figure drawing . There will be an huge emphasis on observational drawing, but the students can add their own creative viewpoints in their projects. Students may use digital apps for this class (Procreate, etc) , but some lessons will require the use of paper and drawing materials. Every lesson there will be a video that will have step by step instructions for the exercises and projects for the week. Lesson 1 - Large Scale Still Life Drawing Lesson 2 - Self Portraits Lesson 3 - Toned Paper Drawing Lesson 4 - Unconventional Creative Drawing
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Large Scale Still Life Drawing
This week, we're tackling a giant still life project! Pick a captivating corner of your room, brimming with textures, colors, or personal treasures. We'll draw it over several days, incorporating gesture drawing to capture the scene's essence. Feeling rusty? Watch the linked video (beginner-friendly!) to refresh your memory on gesture drawing.
Lesson 2:
Self Portraits
Get ready to explore the fascinating world of self-portraits this week! Don't worry if the idea isn't thrilling – drawing your own face is a fantastic way to learn and improve your skills. Need a quick reminder on facial proportions? Check out the linked video from a previous class to refresh your memory on feature placement. Let's create some self-portraits that capture your unique personality!
Lesson 3:
Toned Paper Drawing
This week, we're exploring the magic of toned paper! Watch my video for a deep dive, but grab some grayscale paper if you can find it (alternatives in the video!). Remember, the toned paper acts as your "middle value" – add white for highlights and regular pencil for darks. You can even practice a value scale on a scrap piece to get the hang of it. Let's create stunning art on toned paper!
Lesson 4:
Unconventional Creative Drawing
This week, we're on a treasure hunt – but the prize is in your own home! Grab your sketchbook and pencils because we're creating a one-of-a-kind drawing using everyday objects. The possibilities are endless, so unleash your inner artist and see what unique combinations you can come up with!

External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Central Florida
I am excited to join Outschool as an art teacher! I LOVE art!
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Central Florida with a concentration in painting. I have been teaching private art lessons for 25 years and have been teaching in the classroom for 19 years. I have taught pre school age through High School AP Drawing and AP 2D Design and everything in between.
I have 3 kids (ages 24, 22 and 13) and live in Orlando, Florida where I enjoy photography and streetpainting (chalk art) in my down time. I am a member of the Central Florida Chalk Artists Association and enjoy doing chalk art for events and non-profits. My daughter and I were actually featured on our local TV station back in April which was a lot of fun!
I love teaching students the art skills to be successful! I love to see students who think they can’t draw or paint find success and love what they created and be proud of it!
I like to engage students at their level and help them feel comfortable being creative, have a great time, learn about art even if they don’t realize they are learning along the way. I love to see the AHA moments they have when they create something they thought might be unachievable.
I think that students thrive when they start where they are and have lots of encouragement along the way! I am excited to be able to bring this to students around the country and the world!
