3 in-class hoursClass Experience
This is an advanced writing course. Students taking this class should be past the point of knowing how to put paragraphs together to form an essay. Since we are working past the basics, learners will work on polishing and improving details of each type of writing. I recommend taking my beginner class prior to this one. Students will be creating four types of writing: Narrative Writing (Personal Narrative and Story Narrative), Persuasive Writing and Explanatory Writing. The purpose of this class is to equip and fine-tune learners with the tools they need to help them with the writing process. Each week will focus on one writing. Students will complete one type of writing each week. Week 1: Personal Narrative Writing: Learners will work to write a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a true story about an experience of the writer. Week 2: Story Narrative Writing: Learners will work to write a story narrative. A story narrative is a story imagined by the writer. Week 3: Argumentative/Persuasive Writing: Learners will work to write an persuasive writing. Persuasive writing tells what the author thinks or feels about a topic, and provides reasons to support their thoughts. Week 4: Informative/Explanatory Writing: Learners will work to write an informative/explanatory writing. Informative/Explanatory Writing gives readers information and facts about a topic. Each week, learners will follow the 5-step writing process to complete their writing. The steps will be: 1. Prewriting- Time to think 2. First Draft- Time to write 3. Revising- Time to improve your writing 4. Editing- Time to make corrections 5. Publishing- Time to share Each week, I will walk through each step for the students through a video lesson. I will help the learners get started on their writings. They will not complete the writings during class, but rather will get a grasp and good idea on how to start. Students must upload their completed writings to the classroom to get feedback from the teacher and their peers. Writings must be uploaded before the next week's class. Interaction with other learners: Each week, learners will post their writings to the classroom. Learners will give constructive feedback to their peers on how they can improve their writings. Completed essays should be submitted to the Outschool classroom as a .doc, .docx, .pdf or through the chat. Students also have the option to upload a picture of their handwritten work, but please keep it mind this is harder for other learners to read and respond. Students may also post their questions to the classroom each week. *A letter grade will not be assigned to each writing, but a rubric will be used to assess each work and provide feedback. Students will be given this rubric each week. **Please note, I will NOT be editing each child's work to make it "perfect." Instead, I will be giving feedback to improve the learner's writing where it is needed most, given on a case by case basis. This is a follow-up course to my course Creative Writing Skills: 5-Step Writing Process Through Essay Writing. In that class, students learn the basics of the four different types of writing. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello families! My name is Natalie, and I am a licensed teacher with my Master's Degree in elementary grades K-5 and middle school English. I have been a teacher for 10 years, and I've focused on teaching ESL online for the past four years.
I live on a farm with my husband Darren, who works in law enforcement, and our two children, Sophie who is 8 and Levi who is 5. We mainly raise sheep on our farm, but we also have rabbits, donkeys, goats and chickens! Depending on the time of year, you may see me teaching classes about baby chicks, baby rabbits, or lambs, with surprise appearances from each animal!
In the classroom, you will find that I am laid-back and easy going. I like to meet the children where they are in their learning, even if that means veering off from my original plan for the day based on student need. Flexibility is important in teaching, and I want to give my students and their families a thoughtful and inspired experience!
I will be offering a variety of topics for classes. You may find pre-kindergarten skills, public speaking, social clubs or farm lessons! Please reach out if there is something your child is interested in learning about!
I can't wait to meet you in the classroom!
