Advanced Level
In this two-week course, students will meet 6 times for 50-minutes per period to review concepts that are typically covered in the first semester. The Biology curriculum is centered around 4 big ideas: -Big Idea #1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. -Big Idea #2: Biological systems utilize energy and molecular building blocks to grow, reproduce, and maintain homeostasis. -Big Idea #3: Living systems retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes. -Big Idea #4: Biological systems interact, and these interactions possess complex properties. We'll devote time in each of our classes to discussing how these big ideas fit into each of the topics shown below. Topics: Day 1: Biochemistry Day 2: Cell structure and function Day 3: Cell Energy- Cellular Respiration Day 4: Cell Energy- Photosynthesis Day 5: Cell Cycle- Mitosis Day 6: Meiosis Students must come to class prepared to take notes (by hand whenever possible). I strongly encourage my students to draw and annotate their work to help commit topics to memory. I strongly encourage students to purchase an AP Biology review book. Although it is not required for this class, this will be helpful for continued review outside of class time. I recommend Barron's AP Biology book (available on Amazon for approximately $20). Please be advised that every advanced biology course can differ depending on the instructor. Your student's course may not exactly line up with every topic we cover if the instructor is covering the material in a different order. This course is designed to follow along with a traditional syllabus.
Learning Goals
Students will review material from a typical first semester of Advanced (AP) Biology. They will relate each topic to the 4 big ideas covered in the AP Biology curriculum.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I am a science teacher who resides in Rochester, NY with my husband, two children, and dog. I have twelve years of experience teaching high school level biology and chemistry and love teaching both topics! I completed my MS degree at Towson University where I discovered my passion for microbiology.
In addition to my classroom experience, I have had the opportunity to travel to over 20 countries across the world. Two of my favorite trips, Madagascar and Costa Rica, were real-world field trips with students to focus on local flora and fauna. In my spare time, I love to row crew and workout with my family.
