55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Required knowledge: - Before taking this class, if students don't have any experience with equations, I highly recommend that they take my class "Introduction to Algebraic Equations | Finding X." - Students should be able to solve equations like x - 3 = 15 and 2x + 6 = 24 (answers x = 18 and x = 9 respectively). In this class, we will begin by quickly reviewing the 4 steps to solve equations, and then proceed to advanced equations (like 3x + 2 = 3 - 4x). After students show an understanding of how to solve equations, I will increase the difficulty of the problems. Finally, I'll apply story problems to these equations to show the real world application and purpose. We will then end with a battleship review game to practice solving these equations and to have some fun! As a teacher, I scaffold by demonstrating using multiple examples and then allowing each student to work through similar problems, with each problem becoming increasingly more difficult as that student finds success. If a student doesn't understand, I explain the concept in a different way or compare it to a non-math concept. Each class, I encourage student participation and alter the word problems to involve each student and their interests. Math is more fun when you can relate! We will also finish each session with a review game and a formative assessment with a preview of the next concept, so I can catch any misunderstandings that I may have missed and introduce students to what they will be learning next.
Learning Goals
Students will solve multi-step equations.
Students will solve multi-step equations with variables on both sides of the equation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, and thank you for checking out my profile!
With school starting, I won't be offering as many classes, but hope to start them up in November after adjusting to a new school year. If you follow my profile, you'll be notified when I add new sections.
I am Mrs. Larson, and I am finishing up my first school year as a stay-at-home mom raising my four kids (ages 8, 6, 3, and 4 months old). I have a B.A. in Secondary Education with a major in English and a minor in Mathematics and Coaching. For most of the past decade, I have taught math and English to middle and high school students. The classes I have taught include Algebra, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and 7th-11th grade English. I also have coached high school volleyball for 9 years.
I have a great love for teaching both math and English because of the ability to use the left and right sides of my brain. Numbers and words are the base of our society, and I love educating students to help them understand and excel with math concepts and creating images with their words.
In my free time, I love to travel, explore the beaches of Lake Superior, play volleyball and basketball, organize, and create by knitting and using my Cricut. I look forward to getting the opportunity to meet and teach your child!
