Prior to the next class, learners will write a journal entry about their experience with the homework assignment. At the beginning of each class, learners will be encouraged to share their experiences with the homework assignment. The time to complete each homework assignment will vary based on the topic and the learner's circumstances. However, it shouldn't take more than 2 hours a week.Assessment
Each learner will receive personal, written feedback on each journal entry.Class Experience
This 8-week course will introduce teenagers to various life skills that will position them to succeed in life after high school. This class meets twice a week and will introduce two topics a week. This class is also interactive. The learners will engage with one another and the instructor in a variety of in-class activities like case studies, working through examples, and discussion. I try to personalize the class based on the learners' prior experience and knowledge and interests. Each class will consist of a 15-20 minute introduction of the topic and then activities where the learners will work individually or as a group, and then share their thoughts and findings with the group. This class is hands-on. Each week the learners will be given a homework assignment that will allow them to apply what they learned in class that week or do research about the topic. Learners are encouraged to discuss what they are learning with their parents or family. At the beginning of each class, learners will share their experiences with the homework assignment. The first half of the class will focus on general life skills and the last half of the class will focus on topics that are more related to college. There is also room to alter topics based on the experience and interest of the learners. Topics that will be covered in class are: - Identifying Your Goals, Values, and Strengths - Time Management - Budgeting - Credit Cards, College Loans, and Debt - Organizing Oneself - Food Prep and Cooking - Clothing and Laundry - Home Repairs and Cleaning - Hunting for an Apartment - Being a Good Roommate - Important Documents - Resumes, Cover Letters and Job Interviews - Communication, Professionalism, and Soft Skills - Travel (How to Read a Map, Read Timetables, Rent a Car, Passports, Book a Seat) - College Forms and Policies

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! My name is Liz and I am very excited to be an Outschool teacher.
I am passionate about helping my students set goals and build their knowledge and skills to work towards those goals. My specialties are teaching writing, reading comprehension, and literature to middle school and high school students. Additionally, I worked closely with college-age students for 13 years at several American universities. I have a heart for the young adult and love helping them prepare for the transition to life after high school and to develop life skills.
I offer classes about: writing, reading, grammar, literature, study skills, adulting/life skills, and a smattering of other topics I love including history, music, cats, cooking, travel and mysteries! Courses are interactive and offer a combination of direct instruction and opportunities for practice. My classes range in format from one-time offerings, multi-day courses, full semester classes, and ongoing courses surveying authors/poets/literary genres. I’m also eager to hear YOUR class suggestions!
In my classes, learners should expect to share their thoughts about their writing or what we are learning. They should be open to reflection about their work and trying new things. My goal is for students to learn something new in every class and to take away concrete skills and knowledge to integrate into their daily life.
Learning is an individualized process and I strive to apply the content to each student’s needs and interests. Therefore, I try to keep classes small. Additionally, I provide individualized feedback to every student to help them keep track of what they are learning and identify future areas of growth.
Professionally, I am a former middle school and high school Language Arts teacher and have experience teaching language arts, writing, basic computer skills and job search skills.
I have degrees in Secondary English Education, Postsecondary Higher Education, and Curriculum and Instruction.
I currently hold a Professional Teaching Certificate in Virginia (Language Arts, 6-8). Currently, I am a Curriculum Specialist with the US Government and I help create online language courses.
I live in Northern Virginia with my husband and two cats (who sometimes appear on camera!) In my free time I love to play the flute, sightsee all the wonderful sites Virginia has to offer, and cook.
