I am a small animal veterinarian from Nova Scotia, Canada. During high school, I became pregnant and chose to have the baby and place her for adoption. I have personally gone through the adoption process from meeting with a social worker to meeting potential families that wanted to adopt a baby/child. My adoption journey has given me experience with both closed and open adoption. When visiting my child and her adoptive parents, I have been able to see her grow up and become a woman. She was a flower girl at my wedding and then my second daughter was a flower girl at her wedding. I have done extensive reading on adoption and the impact that it has had on those involved - birth parents, adoptees, and adoptive parents - to gain insight as to the similarities and differences in struggles that each member of the adoption triad could face. I have listened to the challenges that my daughter that I placed for adoption has had growing up. I have encouraged ongoing contact between the daughter I placed for adoption and her siblings (ie. the children that I physically raised in my home) and they continue to maintain contact! While pursuing my undergraduate studies, I volunteered at a non-profit adoption centre and have shared my story many times with those that have had an interest in adoption or that had been impacted by adoption in some manner.
