US Grade 4 - 7
In society today, ADHD is often seen only in a negative light. Yet along with things like hyperactivity and procrastination, come advantages like creativity, empathy, and passion. In this one-time-course, students will learn about the positive aspects that often accompany ADHD. I will introduce students, in layman's terms, to what research suggests may be their ADHD "superpowers." Students will also learn about famous people who have succeeded not in spite of, but perhaps BECAUSE of, their ADHD. During class, students may fill out a graphic organizer that doubles as a small poster that can be hung to remind them of their ADHD "superpowers." Students will also have the opportunity to talk about their own unique strengths. It is my hope that after taking this class, students will see their ADHD as less of a burden and in a more positive light. I am a passionate, experienced, and energetic educator, and I truly love teaching exceptional learners. The world needs more outside-of-the-box thinking, and these students should be celebrated for offering their unique abilities and perspectives to the world.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Iowa Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Morningside College
I have been teaching for more than 18 years, and I have a Master's degree in education. Coursework in understanding and teaching exceptional students was required to complete this degree.
I have also had many students with ADHD in my classes. In my years teaching 4th and 5th grade, I became known for my approach and success with students who struggled with their ADHD. Whether it was my high-energy teaching style or just the soft spot I have for these students, they have seemed to excel in my class.
Recently I have become more interested in this topic. After some research, I gave a presentation on this subject matter to the staff in my home school assistance program. It was my goal to inform and also to encourage teachers to look at students with ADHD through the positive lens that they deserve to be seen in. It occurred to me that students who have ADHD could really use this information as well. Perhaps if they knew more about the benefits that can accompany their ADHD, they may be better able to harness them and feel better about themselves as a whole.
It is my hope that after taking this class, students will see their ADHD as less of a burden and in a more positive light.
