Addition & Subtraction- Regrouping

During this ongoing class, we will zone in on addition & subtraction with regrouping. This class will be broken up into four 30 minute classes. A few materials will be needed for this class. Be sure to check the material section before class begins. 

 Day 1: Intro to Base 10 Blocks
                  -Writing 2 and 3 digit numbers on whiteboards- practice locating ones/tens/hundreds places
                  -Practice building numbers using base 10 blocks
                  -Extra time: begin adding 2 digit numbers using base 10 blocks, what are some mental math strategies that I can use?
Day 2: Addition using Base 10 Blocks
                 -Together, practice addition problems using the base 10 blocks
                 -Solve addition problems individually using base 10 blocks
                 -Extra time: introduce "real world" addition without base 10 blocks- please print attached pdf
Day 3: Addition/Subtraction
                 -Continue (or introduce) "real world" addition problems- 2 and 3 digit- bring attached pdf from yesterday!
                 -Switch over to subtraction- with base 10 blocks
                 Extra time: introduce "real world" subtraction without base 10 blocks
Day 4: Independent Practice with Teacher Support
                -Continue practicing subtraction problems without base 10 blocks
                -Subtraction and addition problems will be given. Student should be using base 10 blocks or the "real world" method to 
                  solve the problems.
                -Discussion: What did I learn? What was hard? What was easy? How can mental math help me solve addition and 
                  subtraction problems?
