Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
Beginner Level
Each week in this ongoing course, students will learn a different strategy to make addition easier to understand. We will focus on one strategy per week and learn everything there is to know about it! This includes using the strategy, understanding how the strategy works, and developing an explanation for how they reached their answer. My goal is to help your child develop the tools necessary to successfully solve basic addition problems.

This course is designed for students who are beginning to learn how to add two numbers together. Our focus will be on single-digit addition (i.e. 4 + 6) and composing teen numbers (i.e. 10 + 6).

Since this course is ongoing, your child can join in the fun at any time to learn one strategy in particular or to build their mathematical toolbox as a whole! Each strategy is independent of the next, so your child does not need to know one strategy to learn another.

Although our strategy will change each week, our routine will not. Each 30-minute class will include the following:

- Student Introduction and Class Expectations
- Subitizing Warm-Up
- Introduction/ Review of the Weekly Strategy
- Weekly Strategy Practice and Discussion
- Addition Action, a game to promote the use of each addition strategy

Here is a list of our upcoming strategies:

- Week of July 11th: Ten Frame
- Week of July 18th: Number Bonds
- Week of July 25th: Tallys
- Week of August 1st: Draw It
- Week of August 8th: Counting On
- Week of August 15th: Number Line
- Week of August 22nd: Counting Tools

In our class, students are encouraged to ask questions and they are allowed to make mistakes. In this fun and engaging environment each students’ effort will is cheered on because, quite frankly, they deserve to know what awesome learners they are! I hope to see you soon!

I am a licensed elementary school teacher with five years of classroom experience working with students in grades K-5. I am well-versed in all current mathematical strategies used in classrooms across the country as well as the educational requirements set by Common Core State Standards. I work to help all students succeed in math by allowing them to find which mathematical strategies work best for them as an individual. I then work with them to develop a deeper level of understanding of their preferred strategy. I believe that all students deserve a positive learning environment where they are encouraged to ask questions and their efforts are celebrated.
