Ad-Lib Nursery Rhymes: Parts of Speech Camp-Humpty Dumpty

In this one-week camp, your child will learn about different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) in a fun way, using nursery rhymes, as they end up creating their own new song, to the same tune, by the end of the week.

Class Experience

Students will learn what nouns, action verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are. They will get practice not only finding those parts of speech in the different nursery rhymes but then will also choose their own to replace the ones in the different nursery rhymes, in each camp, which will reinforce their understanding of each part of speech. Additional words they may not know like "fleece" will also be taught, as will some clapping of syllables to give them a basic understanding of syllables before they learn about them in school.

Parents may want to help their child keep track of the different choices they make for nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs after each class, especially because their child might change their minds when they have more time to think. That should only be about five minutes, or less, per day. After Thursday's class, however, they may need help typing up their final song with the choices/switches they made all week. They also need time to illustrate their song, as well, so they can share their song and drawings on Friday. This may take about an hour, depending on how many illustrations they do. They are welcome to add only one illustration, with the entire song, on a single page....or make a multi-page book out of it, with an illustration on each page, and have only a couple of lines, per page. It all depends on how much your child loves to draw/color/paint.
It would be helpful if students knew the song we are using that week. Other than that, they may need either crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paints to illustrate....(their choice).....and paper so they can illustrate their song at the end of the week. They may also want to have a computer to have caregivers type up their new song for them if they're unable to type it themselves.
Each student will be assessed for understanding as we work through the various parts of speech, each day, and they show me they are able to find nouns, verbs, adjectives, and/or adverbs and then replace them with the same part of speech, in their own songs. They are also assessed by how their overall project shows their understanding of this on our final day. There is no grading....just assessing so I can give feedback to parents when the camp ends.
2 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
