In this 5-week intensive, teens will learn how to step up their storytelling skills through their favourite musical theatre song by using a variety of text, music, and character analysis techniques in a collaborative workshop environment. 

Our first session's main focusses are community building and dipping our toes into the world of musical theatre.

We will begin the session by getting acquainted and talking about what it means to cultivate a safe and brave space. We will then have a brief lesson on what musical theatre is and what it means to be a musical storyteller. 

Each student will then have the opportunity to share the song that they brought in.

Finally, we finish every session with questions and reflections.

Getting to Know You

In this session, we will be focussing on the importance of being an actor first and prioritizing the story. We will be doing this by discussing the importance of punctuation, using our breath as an anchor, creating our scene partner, and monologuing our songs. 

We will begin every session with a check-in and end every session with questions and reflections. At the end of class, I will also provide a small worksheet about objectives and tactics that must be completed before the next week. 

Actors First!

In this session, we will be focussing on elevating our text analysis skills by discussing, and putting into practice, the importance of objectives, tactics, and a moment before; building on the worksheet provided the week prior. 

We will begin every session with a check-in and end every session with questions and reflections. At the end of this session, I will also provide a character description worksheet which must be completed prior to the next week.

What's My Motivation?

In this session, we will be exploring archetypes and character bodies through physical explorations and our songs; expanding on the worksheet provided the week prior.

Stepping Into Someone Else's Shoes

In the final session, we will be discussing how to prepare for a performance, combating stage fright, and trusting your instincts. We will share our songs with each other one final time, and reflect on what we've learned, how we've grown, and celebrate our bravery and achievements over the past 5 weeks!
