What most people don't know is it's not just intuition, talent and luck--- it's work, craft and theory, LOTS of theory! Don't worry all of this theory is learned by ACTING exercises, not lecture. When a theatre student in college begins their acting classes, often they don't start working with a script until year two! That is because an actor must learn to observe real people and situations, react in the moment, create an environment that has significance and build an imaginary world in their mind so that the audience can see what they see and the actor can succeed in suspending reality and all disbelief for a short moment in time. Sounds simple enough, right? This is why the craft of acting is so important! Every week we will be tackling some of the most renowned theatre teachers and acting giants. We will learn theory from the likes of Stella Adler, Uta Hagen, Stanislavski, Meisner, Laban movement techniques and Michael Chekov, just to name a few. If acting theory goes above your head, or you've never done this before--don't worry, that's what I am here for! I am your co-pilot in the acting world and I have studied and used all of these techniques in my professional work. Here's an example of what our weeks together will look like. Note- all of these techniques can be learned in isolation of each other, you do not need to attend the previous week! Week of 6/14: Theme: Environment and Behavior. Topic: Uta Hagen Technique Week 6/21: Theme: Stakes and Size: Topic: Stella Adler Technique Week 6/28: Theme: Relationship to Scene Partner and Working Moment to Moment: Topic: Meisner Technique Week 7/5: Theme: Movement and Character Manifesting in the Body : Topic: Laban Movement Technique Even though this class is specific, it is welcoming and for ALL levels, including those who have never acted before. Additionally, my classes are open and adaptable for ALL abilities--please message me though so I can prepare to adapt to your student's needs. IMPORTANT: It is absolutely ESSENTIAL that the student has their camera on and mic on when prompted. Additionally, please set up the student's camera as if it were a movement class. I will need to see the student from the waist up (standing) when they are performing and see the student walk "onstage".
Learning Goals
Students will learn foundational acting techniques that will make them more confident in their craft!
