Class experience

This class is taught in English.
- Learners will develop an understanding that Shakespeare and his plays are accessible, speak to our modern experience, and are meant for all levels of reader/performer.
- Learners will discover that there are inherent clues in the text that can aid how you approach playing Shakespeare's characters on stage.
- Learners will cultivate enhanced levels of sight-reading and comprehension through practice with iambic pentameter, in a supportive collaborative classroom.
A 2010 graduate of the internationally-acclaimed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, my 10+ years in the acting industry, here in the U.S. and in my native United Kingdom, have seen me appear on world-renowned stages such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre as well as Emmy and Oscar-nominated Television and film projects. What I teach in my class is what I practice in my work and so learners can expect to learn tools being used in the profession today!
Ideally, Learners should have access to hardwired internet or a stable WiFi connection when attending class. Make sure you are situated at a table or desk so that we can easily see your face when reading/performing your speeches - the less you have to hold or interact with the device you are attending class on, the better!

If you are attending class on a TABLET and don't have the ability to bring up multiple windows at the same time, make sure you come prepared with a printed copy of the text for your appropriate class. If you are going to be working on a paper copy of the material, make sure you have a pencil and, ideally, a highlighter to hand to make notes.

Earbuds or Headphones with a mic are recommended - we want to be able to hear all the wonderful contributions to class on the first go!
Most of Shakespeare's plays deal with mature/ triggering content to some degree or another. That said, Learners can vary in their levels of development and comprehension of difficult topics. I would advise parents to confer with the Learner, decide which class in the schedule is appropriate for them.

I also encourage students of either sex to explore both male or female-identifying characters in these classes. Shakespeare was a champion of gender-blind casting and this class should be no different.
The particular edition of these monologues will be from the Folger Shakespeare Library. You can access the texts for free on their website and links to the extracts will be provided, depending on the class schedule.
