1 in-class hoursClass Experience
No acting experience is required, just an open mind and respect for other learners' creative input. This class will be fully interactive. Students will be offered guidance and suggestions for creating believable characters that an audience will relate to and that they will love to play. They will use this knowledge to create multiple characters in class, and will have the opportunity to try some out in improvisations with classmates. Students will explore movement, sound, emotion, environment and more, as well as the impact of all of these things on a character. Students will practice acting by reacting, and accepting what scene partners offer, and adding to it. This class will focus on individual development as well as ensemble building skills--students will have the opportunity to work alone and in groups.
Learning Goals
Students will learn some basic character building techniques, and acting skills. They will also learn some fundamentals of improvisation and ensemble.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Learners may be physically active in this class. Please be sure they have a safe environment with room to move around, and that they are able to move safely in their costumes. Learners are encouraged to bring a water bottle to class, as we will be using our bodies and voices. If you feel your learner may require off screen supervision in order to stay safe in an active class, please have an adult close at hand for the duration of the class.
Supply List
Learners just need to come to class ready to move, participate and interact with other learners. They should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move. If students wish to take notes, or jot down ideas, a notebook and pen/pencil are great to have, but not required. A drink of water nearby is also a good idea, as students will be moving and using their voices.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching all levels and abilities. I have worked with children in various settings, including home school, charter school, camp, after-school clubs, and a performing arts center. I will be offering classes for a range of ages including Drama Book Club, Creating Characters, Devised Drama: Online Edition, and more. I have earned an Associate's Degree in General Studies, a 90-HR Certificate in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre and a Master's Degree in Education with a focus on Inclusive Classrooms. I am currently teaching ESL online. I have worked, in various capacities, in academic, community and regional theatre for more than 20 years. For over a decade, I have been a contributing artist to one of the longest running professional women's theatres in the world. There I have had the opportunity to be a part of the creation of many world premiere works that empower women. The drama classroom gives students an opportunity to be creative, to explore themselves and the world they live in, and to make connections with others. It is a place where struggling students can shine, gifted students can explore new challenges and disengaged students can find a tie. I believe that learning should be enjoyable for students and teachers! My husband and I live in Baltimore City, MD, with our two kids and many pets, and we own a local coffee roasting business and cafe.
