Have a budding actor on your hands? This ongoing class will give learners guidance on practicing the art of Improv scene work. Improv requires confidence, creativity, and strong public speaking skills. Our goal is to help build all three of these in a fun, welcoming, and engaging environment.

We will start off the class with a quick overview, and warm-up exercises. Then we practice our improv skills with theme and character assignments. These will not be announced in advance. The goal is to encourage the learner to tap into their natural impulses and use them to speak confidently in front of an audience.

This course includes a heavy emphasis on thinking outside the box to create a compelling, interesting scene work. Every learner will be given several opportunities to participate throughout the class.

We will wrap up the class with positive feedback. This is a Beginner class, so there will not be any critiques. Instead, we are working to build up confidence in a field that can often be intimidating.

Learners will leave the class with a beginner level knowledge of:
-What makes a good improv scene.
-How to select and enhance your natural impulses for great scene work.
-How to take cues from the situation and scene partners to enhance the scene.

About the teacher: Garrett Young holds a degree in theater from Illinois State University. He has been in multiple professional theatrical productions, and indie films. In addition to his time spent in the storytelling world, he has been a teacher many times over. He has worked for the Boy Scouts of America, at an elementary school, and at a community college. For several years running, he was on the speech team, and competed in the subject of “impromptu speech” where competitors are required to make a 5 minutes speech in 2 minutes or less!
