Class Experience

In this one time class students will create a piece inspired by Matisse's "The Cat With Red Fish"
Henri Matisse (1869 – 1964) was a French painter, sculptor and print maker known for his bold use of color.
I will start of by talking about the artist and showing examples of his work and also his numerous pictures taken with cats which he loved.

Fauvism: A style of painting that flourished in France around the turn of the 20th century. The Fauves used pure, brilliant color applied straight from paint tubes to create a sense of an explosion on the canvas. They also used color in a non naturalistic way. A critic gave them the name Fauves (‘wild beasts’).

We will start of by looking at the artist and some of his work
With my guidance students will draw the scene starting with the bowl of fish then adding the cat and the table
We will then add the window with a view to mountains and some flowers
Wallpaper pattern will then be drawn using whatever pattern the students would like
Next we will paint it. I will be pointing out his use of bright bold colors and will encourage the students to use similar, however if they really want to use other colors that's fine
We will look at his use of patterns and lines
I will encourage students to embellish with lots of lines and patterns to finish off their work

Note: Please do not use printer/copy paper...children are disappointed when their work is floppy and doesn't hold up to painting. If you are unable to get a watercolor pad then mixed media would be another choice. A drawing paper pad, though not meant for painting could work as the paper is a little sturdier.

My teaching style: I am a rather introverted artist who teaches....I am told that I am patient, encouraging, focused, firm. I enjoy/work best with older students. I believe my students should be free to put their own creative touches on their work. I have limited experience with special needs students (ADHD, Autism etc) I hope this is helpful as you read through reviews and decide if your learner will be a good fit.

My name is Camille Jacks, originally from Jamaica, I have lived in the US since 1991. I was awarded a portfolio scholarship to attend The Savannah College of Art and Design where I earned a BFA in Computer Art and Animation and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
My hands are always busy and I love to teach myself new things. I draw, paint, knit & crochet (have written patterns for magazines) needle felt, dabble in origami, macramé, weaving and sewing.
I started my teaching journey as a Media Specialist at a private Elementary school in 2004 where my little girl attended. We moved to Georgia in 2007 and I worked for a company as a mobile computer teacher working with Preschool and Elementary school kids at various schools. The business did not survive so I started working for a company teaching art in the after school programs.
Before Coronavirus I was extremely busy teaching my own adult and kids classes and workshops (oil, watercolor and acrylic) at local county fine arts facilities plus Summer Art Camps. I also taught for a year at a Montessori school and simultaneously started my Outschool journey.
Once in a while I get to do something cool like be a guest demo artist (needle felting) at The High Museum of Art in Atlanta (July 2018). When I am not working I am a mom to a young adult daughter. a little bunny and a Diamond Dove.
