Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This is an 8-week series. Class will meet once every week.

This class is designed for students who want to learn the art of Acrylic Painting while focusing on the use of principles of animal anatomy to create realistic pet portraits. Instructors will use a step by step approach to demonstrate acrylic painting techniques, such as under-painting, illusion of transparency, shadows and highlights, and value layering to illustrate values, depth and texture. Students will learn these essential techniques to paint confidently, progressing from expressionist to more detailed realistic styles throughout the course.

Students will learn about choosing paints, painting surfaces, and how to make the most of their paint and brushes as they paint. Basic color theory and color mixing will be explored as well as textures and techniques. Students will learn how to incorporate principles of animal anatomy and color theory into an animal painting, and add depth and luminous warmth with acrylic washes and glazes.

Everyone will work at their own pace. No previous skills are required. Once students built a solid foundation and keep practicing, they will be able to paint a multitude of unique pet portraits of their own. Classes are highly interactive and students will have the opportunity to socialize and share their ideas in a fun and upbeat environment.

*Each weekly instruction will be finished by the end of class. Students are recommended to continue working on their masterpiece after we have signed off for the day. Since art skills are incremental with practice, the instructions are intended to be re-applied often and spark further inspirations.
