In the world of musical theatre, it's important to understand different musical styles and genres and be able to recognize them and appreciate them on their own merits. Moreover, those interested in auditioning and being a performer in musical theatre should understand the differences so as to have audition material prepared that is applicable to the specific show. Students interested in auditioning for Musical Theatre will learn about 5 different genres of musical theatre repertoire. From these 5 genres, students will learn about different shows and composers and musical styles. They will also be instructed in ways of researching musical theatre shows and how to listen to music that they connect with. Different examples of music will be played so that students will understand the feel and idea of the songs/shows. Emphasis will be placed on shows that are age-appropriate and normally used for youth theatre. A worksheet/rubric will be given to students to use in their exploration of composers and songs. There is no required experience or knowledge necessary and no actual singing will be required.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of different types of music and musical genres, as well as be introduced to different composers and musical styles.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!
My name is Heather Statham or Ms. Heather!
I'm a performer and Vocal Coach in Atlanta, Georgia, and have been on stage my entire life and love everything about it!
As a Vocal Coach, I have helped students learn how to find the best music and material to showcase their talents from college auditions to reality shows to Carnegie Hall! I'm also a Certified Rock the Auditon coach which means I help Musical theatre students and performers learn how to authentically prepare for and perform in Pop/Rock musicals.
Over my years as a performer and educator, I love working with children in the theatre and cultivating their love and interest in all aspects of the art form. I believe that "play" and "exploration" are important to learning and I work to implement that in all of my classes.
Additionally, I am the vocalist and manager for the award-winning Atlanta band, ThunderGypsy, a tap dancer, a lover of all things Disney, and a Sorority House Mom.
I can't wait to share with you my love and passion and interest in all things Broadway, Disney, Dancing, and Music!
See you soon!
Ms. Heather
