Currently learners participate in programs twice a week and learn the basics of our "Karate" system of WONJIN Hapkido. There are belt advancement opportunities. However, focused learners wanting to progress at a more rapid pace can now register in sessions to attain the skills needed to advance at a more accelerated pace. "Accelerated Karate for Teens" does not cut any corners in learning, rather it doubles the class sessions needed for rank advancement and focuses on the specific...
Learners will be coached in certification level techniques, corresponding FORMS including self-defense and Life Defense applications. Upper Level Protection against strikes and grabs, Lower Level Protection against kicks, Push Protection, Tackle Protection, Mount Protection, Front Choke Protection, Rear Choke Protection, Front Grab Protection, Rear Grab Protection, Restraint Protection from grabs, Guard Protection from the ground, and Throw Protection. Note: Korean terminology is used to create a special learning environment. Learners will be using basic terminologies and counting and Korean on a regular basis.
Master Instructor Allen Hughes (Kwanjangnim) holds Master Instructor Certifications in WONJIN Hapkido and Taekwondo as well as an International Instructor Certification in Haidong Gumdo (a 1700 year old sword art). I am a certified Verbal Defense Instructor and have trained elementary, middle school, junior high and high school kids in public and charter school anti-bullying programs. I own a professional dojang (Korean for dojo) and train Master Instructors from other systems and schools in Life Defense.
Certification candidates should practice their FORM (curriculum practice) 7-10 minutes per day, and come to each session ready to report their use of Life Defense principles in their life, and self-defense questions about the their FORM. Practice requirements are reported to the group daily through OutSchool messaging, and or oral reports to the group.
Comfortable, modest workout attire to begin is required for this class. Before their first test a Karate style, black, traditional, student dobok or gi (uniform) is required. Uniforms and rank belts are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased online here: https://www.tigerclaw.com/home.php Remember to have at least a 6' X 6' area clear of furniture for our sessions.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Testing/ certifications will occur within the sessions according to each student's ability, and training time (including regular class training sessions), and consist of FORM presentation and application explanation. Assessment from the instructor is a "pass or re-test request" until advancement level is attained. Note: Evaluation is progressive as higher ranks are achieved. Example: White Belts testing for Yellow Belt are judged at Yellow Belt level, while Blue Belts testing for Brown Belt are judged at Brown Belt level.
1 hour 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Although Life Defense is purely defensive, and no fighting or sparring is required, the subject matter is being safe, and reference will be made to attackers, and simple, age appropriate scenarios of defense. Safety and Life Defense is our goal. Also, make sure you have a practice space big enough, and remove obstacles that could cause a hazard. It's a good idea to hydrate before, and after and do some jumping jacks just before class to warm up.
