Assessment
I welcome on-going communication from learners and family. I will assess learners in multiple ways (discussion, projects, written work) depending on the goals of the learner, and will send monthly written progress assessments to the learners I meet with regularly and their family.Class Experience

*Please use the following coupon code for our first meeting so you can more comfortably figure out if I'm the best fit for your learner. Coupon code: ANDERS2OS785 (for a $5 session). If you don't see a time that works for your schedule, please reach out. I do have availability and am looking to meet new learners.* While I have the experience and always come to tutoring with a plan based on what the learner should be practicing, what I love about tutoring is the work to flexibly adjust the plan based on the learner's interest, experience, and needs. I personalize our time together so the learner is challenged without being overwhelmed. We will work together communicating throughout, discussing new concepts, practicing, and meeting goals. During our tutoring time together we will work on writing skills that are the core for high school and beyond, such as: *Moving from simple sentence structure to complex *Writing a paragraph with a clear claim (or topic sentence), evidence, reasoning to explain how the evidence supports the claim, and conclusion. *Researching and writing a five-paragraph essay Games My students and I use a lot of games because: *Games often allow for practicing more than one concept (for example, multiplying fractions and multiplying whole numbers), students have the opportunity to celebrate what they do know while challenging themselves with a concept that is still tricky. In this way games can increase confidence. *Games allow students to practice and display multiple tools of being a learner, such as logic, creative thinking, strategy, organization, and communication, in addition to the specific content we are targeting. It is important for students to learn the skills of being a student with the academic content.
Learning Goals
The learner and I will create goals together. Depending on age and experience, together we will likely practice:
*Sentence structure:
As students practice sentence writing, they work to make their sentence structure more interesting while maintaining the clarity so important in written communication. We play games, use models from their favorite books, and create sentences students are proud of.
*Paragraph writing:
Beginning in upper elementary through the beginning of high school, students learn how to write a paragraph using a topic sentence (claim), evidence, and reasoning to connect their evidence to the topic sentence. I support this practice by giving students scaffolding to support the organization of their thoughts. In addition, we play games and use models to help students recognize clear and interesting writing. As they practice, I gradually take the structures away and ask them to reflect how they work more independently. Once students write paragraphs that are clear and organized, we learn how paragraphs can work together in a longer essay.
*Five-paragraph essay
There is a specific structure to the five-paragraph essay that middle- and high-school students learn, with an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. Together we look at models to appreciate and critique the structure, clarity, and interest level of an essay. From there I guide my student through the process, incorporating structures to make the organization clear, and my student’s interests to make the work fun.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am in the midst of a joyful career in education, tutoring 3rd-11th grade students over the past eight years after teaching in the classroom for 15 years. I have experience with and a passion for teaching and sharing ideas about the world to learners, and a strong knowledge of a wide range of topics in math, writing, organization, and executive functioning. Integrated into my work I have experience and special interest in mindfulness and physical movement to support learning, helping students develop academic and personal confidence and emotional strength, supporting and centering gender queer folks, academic support of learners who have fewer resources and support at home, and supporting students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or executive function challenge. In addition, I have experience and interest in working with twice exceptional (2e) learners who are on the autism spectrum.
Confidence: It is impossible to learn when we are feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and flooded by school, and students often find me in this emotional state. I teach learners by combining a variety of practices with the goal of the student learning both academic content and the deep knowing that they can do it with focus and a positive mindset. We set goals and develop an action plan together, and then get to it. Depending on the goal, we play games, practice strategies to make retrieving information more efficient, and work through projects, structured writing, problems, and activities that push students at the level they are ready for. As I bring student’s attention to what they can accomplish independently, students feel successful in their work and gain confidence. With this confident, growth-mindset ready to go, students can accomplish more than they imagine.
Independence: I guide students to work through challenges as independently as possible because that is where the learning happens. I also know that students often need the right question or piece of feedback to refocus their efforts before frustration overwhelms them. I have the experience and desire to find that balance with each student so they see that they have the power and resources to direct their own learning. As students progress, we take the important step of self-reflection to notice how (and why!) there has been strong progress. In this way students see how they are working more and more independently, and are ready when it’s time for them to move on without me. My goal is always for my students to learn the content and learn the study skills so they can work independently.
Fun: Learning is fun, yet many of the students I work with have lost that joy. When I work with students I help them find the joy of learning by listening to them, giving them work that is accessible and challenging, and ask them questions to guide them in connecting the work to their lives. Students leave their sessions with me with comments like, “it’s over already?” “that was fun,” and “in tutoring I always feel like I can do it.” Successfully meeting goals, playing games, and feeling known and listened to by a trusted guide is a recipe for fun in learning. I see my students smile and laugh when we’re together, and I’m glad that they report that our sessions feel fun.
