Beginner Level
In this class I'l be covering: •Parts of the guitar and basic guitar vocabulary •Finger, string, and fret numbers and names •Putting these together to play a note •Reading open chord grids •Playing chords •Names of chords and difference between major and minor chords •Deciding on your own chord fingerings •How to hold a pick •Changing between chords •How to use your favorite songs as practice tools •Finding guitar chords for your favorite songs online and how to read them •Deal-breaker chords and how to know what songs aren't good for beginners Although I will be teaching all concepts to a general group class, I like to keep my class numbers small so I can check in with each student and make sure they understand the concepts and are doing well. I like to teach with a hands-on approach, so I will make sure each student can not only understand the concepts, but can also play the chords and exercises given.
Learning Goals
After this class, students will be able to read and play basic major and minor chords, and know how to search online for their favorite songs to use as practice tools on their own.
Other Details
Pre-Requisites
Students should know how tune their own guitar (check out my group tuning workshop or schedule a one-on-one private lesson where I'll teach you how).
Supply List
I provide all source material, mostly in the form of PDF files, which are often customized to the student's preferences (for example, customized chord fingerings we decide on in the lesson to work best with their hand size and type).
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching music, singing, and playing the guitar professionally for over 30 years, and have taught thousands of students. I studied classical guitar at Kennesaw State University, and jazz guitar at Georgia State University. I started teaching exclusively online in 2018, and can teach with a variety of camera angles and online resources.
I teach a wide variety of styles, including rock, jazz, metal, classical, country, 80s rock, classic rock, funk, and more. I also teach a wide variety of specialized playing techniques, like fingerpicking, improvisation, developing speed in scales and chords, singing while playing an instrument, playing and learning music by ear, songwriting, and understanding music theory on a practical level.
I can teach anyone from the absolute "square one" beginner who has never played a guitar or other instrument before, to a musician of any skill level who wants to take it to the next level or get back on track with their playing.
