Abrsm Music Theory in Practice: Grade 1 (Self-Paced)
In this 7-week self-paced lessons, students will explore music theory topics like pitch, tempo, and dictation, focusing on time values, bar lines, time signatures, rests, ties, and dots, all in preparation for the ABRSM Grade 1 exam.

Students will learn through lectures, readings, exercises, and listening assignments provided by the teacher. Students may email the instructor if there are any questions. The class time is structured according to the following topics as outlined in the ABRSM. This section is designed for the young learner's pace. Supplementary materials will be provided for additional practice. Upon completion, the following class would be 𝐀𝐁𝐑𝐒𝐌 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞: 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝟐 (𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝). This course will use video examples, and assignment explanations, and will provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also complete melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation throughout the course. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will complete their ear training assignments in the form of a recording and upload them to the classroom where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will be melodic and rhythmic dictations where learners will interact with the instructor via video. There will also be different music applications used for the course that will encourage interaction between learners. Assignments will be due two days prior to the scheduled meeting to allow the instructor to provide timely feedback to the learner via the Outschool classroom. Each lesson is a combination of lecture, listening, and virtual discussion about the material covered in the lesson. For each lesson, students will do short video presentations about each topic discussed in each lesson and the teacher will provide feedback. Students are expected to provide positive and constructive about their final composition projects to one another.
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of basic music theory concepts, including pitch, tempo, and time values, to enhance their overall musical knowledge.
Students will improve their melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation skills by accurately identifying and notating musical elements such as rests, ties, and dots.

Currently serves at the Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2024-2026) at Concordia University, Montréal, she is also recipient of the Fulbright and Portuguese Science & Technology awards. She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.
