Description

Class Experience

Learners will understand guidelines and tools for the following styles: short stories, monologues, poetry, and playwriting.
Learners will develop a deeper appreciation for reading fiction.
Learners will gain a more comprehensive understanding of English mechanics, including grammar and punctuation.
The course is taught by a graduate of New York University's Dramatic Writing Program and published author of two novels for young adults.
Each week, learners will be asked to complete a first draft of a creative writing exercise using that week's tools. This will range from a short monologue to a novel chapter. While learners will be asked for a page-count on assignments (never more than three typed pages), these do not have to be polished drafts. No student will be reprimanded for bringing an unfinished assignment to class.
Notebook and pen OR tablet/computer for note-taking.
Learners will bring a short assignment to each class to share with the group. Learners will give and receive constructive feedback from classmates and the instructor. No formal letter grade will be given, but the instructor will review every assignment in order to give personalized feedback for improvement. Learners who don't wish to share with the entire group can still send their assignments to the instructor for personalized review.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
