Through the visual presentation of a Power Point, we will highlight: • Abe’s younger years of learning and development • The political setting of pre- Civil War America • His courtship with Mary Todd • Technological advances in photography • Acts and Laws passed to prevent the spread of slavery • The Abolitionist Movement • Abe becomes President • The subsequent secession of the Southern States • Challenges during his presidency- personal and national • Emancipation Proclamation • Gettysburg Address • Generals of the Civil War • How Thanksgiving became a National Holiday • South surrenders, a country re-united • Abe Lincoln remembered We will discuss in sequence with the children's early reader text, Who Was Abraham Lincoln? by Janet Pascal. There is no background knowledge expected, the book will be divided into 3 sections which will be required reading (this is the bulk of time required outside of class time). Learner progress is evaluated as we review at the beginning of each class and ask discussion questions throughout. I've always enjoyed learning about the influential figures who have changed the paths of our American and World History. The magic happens when children are taught about these individuals through the medium of story- sharing life experiences and discussing the why/ how of developing qualities such as courage, perseverance, and empathy (just to name a few). And more importantly, why these endangered virtues are invaluable in defining our own lives today.
