Are you interested in learning more about psychological disorders? In this ongoing course, we will discuss a different disorder each week. I will use a case-study based approach, meaning we will learn about disorders from examining patients. We will take a research and scientific approach to studying disorders. I will present information about each disorder and include current research on the causes and consequences of each psychological disorder. Students will gain an understanding of each disorder, but will not be able to diagnose disorders. Here's the list of disorders we will cover. Join the class at any time - each week is independent from each other. I will continue to update our schedule of disorders each month. Week of September 23rd: Why did psychologists conduct frontal lobotomies? Week of September 30th: A case of Munchausen syndrome, or factitious disorder imposed on the self Week of October 7th: Obsessive-compulsive disorder case Week of October 14th: Attachment and body representations in adolescents with personality disorder Week of October 21st: An episode of psychotic depression in the setting of congenital corpus callosum agenesis: A case report Week of October 28th: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing of Maleficium: Case Study of a “Cursed” Woman Suffering From Unexplained Pain Week of November 4th: An examination of ADHD and case study Week of November 11st: A case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy No prior knowledge of psychology is needed.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I will present information about the criteria to diagnosis the different disorders from the DSM. Some of the criteria might be violent in nature. For example, with antisocial personality disorder, there is sometimes violence towards other people. I will state the criteria, but we won't go into detail about the violence. Most of the class will be focused on current research with the different disorders. We will sometimes use case studies to illustrate points, but the material will be age appropriate for learners 13+.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will use the DSM V, as well as current research articles, in the class.
