Description

Class Experience

Students taking this class will focus on five learning goals.

Develop basic drawing skills: By the end of the class, students should be able to draw a variety of animals using basic shapes and techniques, such as circles, lines, and shading.

Improve hand-eye coordination: Drawing requires good hand-eye coordination, and this class will help students to develop this skill through a variety of exercises and activities.

Learn about different animals: Each session of the class will focus on a different animal, providing students with a broad range of knowledge about different habitats, diets, behaviors, and physical characteristics.

Enhance listening and comprehension skills: The class will include storytelling about the animal of the day, followed by comprehension questions, which will help students to develop their listening and comprehension skills.

Foster creativity and imagination: Drawing is a form of creative expression, and this class will help students to unleash their creativity and imagination by encouraging them to experiment with different colors, shapes, and techniques when drawing their animals.
I'm a professional artist, photographer, and author from East Texas. I love to connect art with everything else in life—math, science, history, and language arts.

To date I have had the privilege of teaching over 2,100 students over the past three years teaching on Outschool.

I've been homeschooling for 19 years and have taught children's art classes privately and through local after-school programs.
My art lessons and photography have been internationally published on blogs and magazines. I also wrote a book about photography!

As a home educator with an eclectic view on teaching methods (including classical education, the trivium, Charlotte Mason, the Socratic Method, unschooling, and child-directed learning), I see the power of making connections in everything we do. Art happens to be my favorite tool to use when guiding students in making connections as well.
Homework is not required but students will be provided with supplemental learning activities that they can complete to complement each week's lesson in the form of a downloadable printable PDF document.

To participate in this class, students will be provided with a printable PDF packet and will also need some basic art supplies. Here are some supplies that may be required: Paper: Students will need paper to draw on. Ideally, the paper should be thick enough to prevent bleed-through from markers or other drawing tools. Drawing tools: Students will need some tools to draw with, such as pencils, crayons, markers, or colored pencils. The type of drawing tools may vary depending on the age and skill level of the student. Erasers: Erasers are an essential tool for artists to correct mistakes or refine their work. Sharpeners: If students are using pencils, they will need sharpeners to keep their pencils sharp.
Assessment for meeting the learning goals in this class will be informal and ongoing throughout the course of the class. Here are four ways that students may be assessed:

Observations of student artwork: The instructor will review and assess each student's artwork throughout the class to evaluate their progress in developing their drawing skills and hand-eye coordination.

Comprehension questions: After the storytelling portion of each session, students will be asked comprehension questions about the animal of the day, which will help to evaluate their listening and comprehension skills.

Feedback and participation: The instructor will provide feedback to each student as they work on their drawings and encourage participation during class activities and discussions.

Self-assessment: The instructor may also encourage students to assess their own progress by reflecting on their artwork and the skills they have developed over the course of the class.

Overall, the assessment for meeting the learning goals in this class will be focused on providing feedback and encouragement to students rather than formal testing or grading. The goal is to help students develop their skills and confidence in a supportive and encouraging environment.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
