Class Experience

In this group for enthusiastic writers we will focus on a variety of important writing skills. Each class will have a different theme and teach new skills which will be used to complete different creative writing challenges. Students will be given creative writing prompts to spark their creativity. We will end the classes by sharing our stories with each other in each class. These classes will be a relaxed and social bonding experience for students to share their writing passion.

Class 1: Willy Wonka to Darth Vader - Characters
The key to a great story is engaging characters. What is it that makes a reader care about your characters? How can you craft complex and compelling characters? This is the question we will be exploring in this class. Then armed with the tools we have learnt we will write stories with compelling original characters.

Class 2: Freaky Friday - Point of View
Same story, different viewpoint. In Freaky Friday a mother and daughter swap bodies and get a real insight into what it is like to be somebody else. In this class we will discuss point of view, what it is and why it is important. We will consider what is gained by having your story told from different perspectives. Then we will write a story featuring two characters, first from one character’s perspective, then from the others.

Class 3: Warrior Cats - Point of View II and Conflict
In this class we will use animals as inspiration for our writing. After discussing things to consider when writing from an animals perspective we will each select an animal and write a story from its perspective. Then we will look at what conflict is and why it is important in stories. We will look at the different types of conflicts that characters experience. Then we will write a story about an animal story with a compelling conflict.

Class 4: Harry Potter vs Voldermort - Conflict II
First we will discuss some familiar arch-enemies. Then we will select a familiar pair of arch-enemies or create our own and write an adventure featuring them.

Class 5: Narnia to Hogwarts- Setting
We will begin by defining what setting is and looking at the different types. Then we will examine its importance for building atmosphere and contributing to the storyline. Utilising this knowledge we will write a riveting story based in a real setting. Then we will write a story set in a fantasy world filled with magic, supernatural elements and magical creatures.

Class 6: Time Travel: Historical Fiction - Setting II
Historical accounts of events narrated by people living through them are extremely powerful. We will discuss important considerations when writing stories set in the past then we will choose a significant period or event in history and write a journal entry as if we were living through it.

This group will ensure that the students develop a love of writing and improve their writing technique, while becoming more motivated, confident writers.

If you can’t see a class time listed that works for you then please let me know what EST time you are interested in and I will see if I can make a class that fits your schedule.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Hayley, and I teach classes on film analysis & book appreciation, movie making and writing classes. I have worked in children’s book publishing and have studied film and literature for a number of years. I also used to be a Children's Party Entertainer so I know how to keep kids entertained! I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with my students to help them develop a passion for books and films. I believe stories in all formats teach us so many valuable life lessons. I also hope to inspire your children to enjoy the creative writing process. I think writing is a skill that can help us to uncover our deep rooted beliefs and desires and that it can be deeply therapeutic. In my spare time I watch a lot of movies, read, write, cycle, dance, swim and enjoy spending time with my family.
