A Way With Words: Weekly Vocabulary Building for Middle School
This ongoing class uses games and fun activities to teach students a list of new vocabulary words each week. This course helps students build the strong vocabulary they need in order to excel at reading comprehension and written expression.

Vocabulary building is an essential part of reading comprehension. If students are unfamiliar with the words they come across in books, they will have a difficult time understanding what they are reading. This ongoing corse is designed to help students gain confidence with using new words as they expand their vocabulary. Every week, students will be given a list of ten vocabulary words. The lists will focus on words that appear frequently in grade-level texts and that students should know before entering high school. After reviewing the definition of each word, the students will be given an activity that allows them to practice reading the words in context and using the words in their own writing. We will end each class with a review game that uses the words studied that week. Sample List: plausible, incredulous, scrupulous, unscathed, clamber, pique, fathom, blithely, nimble, lax These classes do not build on each other and each week will focus on a different list of words. Students are welcome to join and leave the class at any time.
