In this one-time course, students will observe the appearance and properties of periodic table elements

Class experience

This class is taught in English.
I hope to show the periodic table as a fundamental organizing idea relevant not just for chemistry, but all the sciences. I also hope to stimulate curiosity and instill appreciation of the beauty of science.
During my research career, I've studied the toxicity of air pollutants and radioactive materials. I have experience working with hazardous materials. I like to help students understand that materials are often not purely toxic or non-toxic. For example, the element oxygen is absolutely necessary for human life, but breathing high concentrations can damage the lung and other organs.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
As an element collector, I've obtained samples of most of the periodic table elements that are legally and safely available to collect and display. However, some of the materials presented in this class are chemically reactive, mildly radioactive or otherwise need careful handling procedures. I always emphasize safety, and believe that the containment procedures I demonstrate for the elements (as well as the fact that I will never collect some elements) will help students better understand the nature of chemical reactivity and toxicity.
Although not required, students may find it helpful to have a copy of a periodic table available to refer to during the course. I especially like the tables sold by Theodore Gray. The periodic table display I use is illustrated on my science4man YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/xLR-ZH_8uuM). I also like the free copy of the periodic table available to download from the Los Alamos National Laboratories website (https://periodic.lanl.gov/index.shtml).
