Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this one-time, one-on-one class, I will introduce students to the concept of decimals by relating them to fractions. I will begin by presenting an overview of the patterns that exist in our place value system and describing how these patterns continue when we add numbers to the right side of the decimal point. Then, we will draw tenths (on graph paper that I will provide) and write these numbers as both fractions and decimals. As part of this process, we will add simple fractions and decimals and explore mixed numbers and mixed decimals. If time allows, we will then move to hundredths by learning how to draw, say, and write these numbers. As we practice these skills, I will encourage a positive view of math and share useful tips and suggestions that I have gathered during my 28 years as a National Board Certified elementary school teacher and my thorough training in the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach to mathematics.
The 1-on-1 approach allows me to customize the class so that students can focus on the topics most relevant to them and work at their preferred pace. I can also address specific goals or needs a student might have. In addition, students can take this class more than once, and each time they can deepen their understanding of certain skills and concepts, gain additional practice, or shift to a different focus. After each session, I will send a parent email reviewing the specific material we addressed and suggesting potential next steps should parents wish to enroll their child in one or more follow-up sessions.

Notes:
• Prior experience with fractions will be helpful for students, but it is not required.
• Before class begins, please be sure to print the graph paper that I will send prior to the start of our session. That will enable us to make the most productive use of our time. Thanks.

I am a National Board Certified elementary school teacher, and I have taught math every year of my 28-year career. I have been thoroughly trained in the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach to mathematics. It's very important to me that my students make sense of their mathematics, develop strong conceptual understanding, build a solid foundation of skills, enjoy their math, gain confidence, and find the subject interesting, engaging, and meaningful.
