This class uses Roald Dahl's classic novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in order to teach the story elements of fiction and the comprehension strategies of visualization, activating background knowledge, inferencing and summarizing. The students will be assigned chapters to read or listen to outside of class, along with completing work in an interactive reading journal (provided by the instructor). Class will be very interactive and include a variety of extension activities that will complement the novel reading. The weekly structure will be as follows: WEEK ONE: Pre-reading activities and author study -Introduction of key vocabulary, interactive pre-reading games -virtual trip through a real chocolate factory WEEK TWO: Chapters 1-6 -Discussion in pairs -Golden ticket sequencing activity WEEK THREE: Chapters 7-11 -Learn the history of chocolate and play an interactive game about how it is made -parts of speech activity in relation to candy -character sketches in pairs WEEK FOUR: Chapters 12-16 -guided descriptive writing assignment -Art activity WEEK FIVE: Chapters 17-21 -Willy Wonka's inventions -candy experiment (chosen on week 3 from a set of examples) WEEK SIX: Chapters 22-30 - Trivia review game -Art activity

Supply List
A notebook or binder with paper to use for creating a lapbook/ interactive notebook. All lapbook materials will be provided by the instructor for downloading. Students will need a copy of Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate factory" and art supplies: crayons, scented markers, colored pencils, watercolors and mixed media paper.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.Ed. in Special Education with a level 2 certificate as a Wilson Reading System instructor (a multi-sensory reading/phonics program). I taught second grade through eighth grade over the course of fifteen years in the public school system. Currently, I'm a homeschooling mother of three.
I have a passion for teaching Reading and Writing and trying to instill this passion in my students. I love the creative side of teaching and enjoy making my classes as interactive as possible.
If I am not teaching or spending time with my family, I can be found with my nose in a book or testing new allergy-friendly baking recipes!
