Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Come learn about criminal law and play Among Us! This class will be perfect for all students. For those that wish to be lawyers, it will be a preview of what they will learn in law school. For others, it will give them the knowledge to understand the principle behind state laws. Even if one is not a lawyer, everyone should be familiar with criminal law and the criminal justice system. It will be a great way to understand things that are going on in the news. We will learn about criminal law in the first half of class and then play Among Us together in a private game in the second half. Criminal topics are taught as we learn them in law school. Students learn about the legal theories behind actual state laws. Students will learn what all the verbiage means, and then apply them to hypothetical scenarios. This will utilize their analytical thinking skills! Students often make comparisons to what we learned in class to what is happening during gameplay. Criminal law topics include murder, property crimes, other crimes against the person, defenses, and more!

While I normally teach to only one learner and do not cancel classes due to low enrollments, please note that this game requires a minimum of four players. As such, please be aware that playing Among Us will depend on a minimum number of 3 students enrolled. If there are less than 3 students enrolled, we will only focus on learning criminal law for the first half of class and then end the class early. If this happens, I will issue a 50% refund. Please note that the class size is maximum 14 students to allow a full game of Among Us (there can be up to 15 players, this is the most fun!)

This class will be about 20-25 minutes of talking about criminal law, and for the rest of the class, we will play Among Us.

My teaching style: I love to facilitate learners in using their logic to analyze the situations and cases at hand. I also like to use modern examples that the students find relevant to solidify learning and memorization. Students can expect to be asked hypothetical scenarios that will utilize their analytical thinking skills to answer. Students will then be given the "black letter law," or the legal definitions/rules behind the cases at hand. The nuances of the rules will be explained in more detail and then students will be able to apply what they have just learned as they analyze a case studied in law school. Then comes the game!

I will prepare a private game for our group. Learners will be given the code to access the private game. This will be a secure way to play that ensures all students are playing together and keeping strangers away.

Please have the Among Us app downloaded and ready to your learner's device before starting. Learners should have an idea of how to play beforehand. If they do not, please let me know and we can schedule to meet a few minutes before class to go over gameplay.

Each week, a new topic will be covered and students will not need to have knowledge of the previous weeks to understand where we are. As such, students can come and go at any time

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a law student that excelled in criminal law, evidence, and trial procedure. I also am a true crime enthusiast and spend a lot of time reading articles and watching documentaries on interesting cases. It has been an amazing experience to link my interest in true crime with the academic study of the law. Students that are aspiring lawyers, future agents, and true crime enthusiasts have enjoyed taking this class and learning about criminal law, from the act to the guilty verdict.
