Class Experience
In this 20 week course, learners will journey through American History from the Gilded Age through the Great Depression. Students will interact with recorded content lectures while they complete guided notes. Once they have completed the notes for the week, they will have the opportunity to engage in historical discussion with their classmates via discussion board in the Outschool classroom. The outline of the course is as follows: Unit 1: The Gilded Age: During this unit, learners study about the final settlement of the frontier; the industrialization and rise of big business in America; and the urbanization of America, along with the rise of political machines and eventual civil service reform. Week 1: Settlement of the West and Native American Relations Week 2: Populism in the Gilded Age Week 3: Second Industrial Revolution Week 4: Robber Barron or Captain of Industry: Monopolies in the Gilded Age Week 5: Immigration and Urbanization and Working Conditions and Governments of the Gilded Age Unit 2: The Progressive Era: During this unit, students learn about how progressive reformers brought about social and political change at the local, state, and national level; the emergence of the Progressive Party; and how reform legislation changed the relationship between business and government. Week 6: The Rise of the Progressive Era Week 7: Social Reformers of the Progressive Era Week 8: City and State Governments Week 9: The Federal Government Unit 3: America Becomes a World Power: During this unit students examine U.S. foreign policy in the early twentieth century including, involvement in the Spanish-American War; the development of U.S. foreign policy in regards to Latin America, China and Japan; and involvement in the First World War. Week 10: America's Changing Foreign Policy Week 11: American Imperialism Week 12: The Outbreak of WWI Week 12: Fighting WWI Week 13: The Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations Unit 4: The Roaring 20's: During this unit, students study about the economic prosperity of the 1920s; the rising of nativism in 1920s society; and the social and cultural changes of the1920s that resulted in clashes between those embracing new values and those wanting to preserve traditional society. Week 14: A Return To Normalcy: America in the 1920's Week 15: America in the 1920's Week 16: Conflict in the 1920's Unit 5: The Great Depression: During this unit students study about the causes of the Great Depression along with the economic and social impact of the depression; the economic impact of the “Dust Bowl” on the agricultural sector; and about the provisions of the New Deal along with its impact on the role of government. Week 17: Causes of the Great Depression Week 18: Hard Time 1929-1932 Week 19: FDR & the New Deal Week 20: FDR & the Second New Deal This course was designed to provide a better understanding of American history from 1877 and has been successfully used in the classroom as part of a blended learning model for a state tested course. It would be a great supplement for your learner if they are currently taking or will be taking an American History from 1877 course.
