In this one time class, students will listen to an interactive read aloud of a book called "14 Cows for America." Prior to reading the book, we will briefly discuss the events of 9/11 to set a background for the story. We will analyze the text and images, discuss the author and point of view, and the culture of the Maasai people. My teaching style is engaging and interactive, and I love to ask guided questions to help students understand the concepts and be able to concisely state their thoughts. At the end of the class, we will write a cinquain poem together. I will guide the students in creating a cinquain poem and understanding the elements that go into writing one.
Learning Goals
Students will have a brief review of the events that took place in America on 9/11, and the impact that this had on other cultures (specifically the Maasai tribe.) Students will be offered guided questions to discuss the text and images. At the end of the class, students will help create a cinquain poem to further apply content.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
I'm so glad you are here. My name is Meagan. I graduated from Florida State University in 2011 with a degree in psychology and child development. I have taught for 6 years in the public school system, and also have experience teaching students online. My passion is teaching language arts, reading, and critical thinking skills to middle school students. One of my favorite things about being a teacher is finding unique topics to use to create lessons, and watch students engage in the material in a brand new way. I find that allowing students time to independently process material and practice new skills is one of the best ways to create lifelong learners.
New Orleans is my home, and I love spending time outside with my family! I also LOVE to travel to new places. I cannot wait to meet you soon!
