Welcome! In this class I help learners relax by providing explicit instruction to help them make sense of the reading details to then explain it in writing. In this class, I share screen to present the strategies, provide reading passages from online resources, such as readworks. orgs and show brief videos and illustrations to support comprehension. Week 1Lesson 1Can you RACE?Learn how to use a pattern to start writing. Students will learn the acronym RACE means to restate the question, answer, cite, explain and will demonstrate understanding through examples.Lesson 2Follow a pattern. Step 1Structure your writing by using a sentence frame to correctly answer a short answer response question.Week 2Lesson 3Where did you find the information?Focus your writing based on where you got the information by using key terms. Students will participate in a reading scavenger hunt to find sentences that direct attention to important information in the text.Lesson 4Follow a pattern. Step 2Structure your writing by using a sentence starter that explicitly refers to the text as the basis for your answer.Week 3Lesson 5How do you know that's right?Apply key words to organize your writing to demonstrate you're answer is correct.Lesson 6Follow a pattern. Step 3Combine sentence starters and sentence frames to include provide reasons and proof by using three phrases.Week 4Lesson 7Is that true?Learn how to define new information, and unfamiliar terms.Lesson 8Follow a pattern. Step 4Use simple expressions to demonstrate expertise by supplying definitions and examples to expound in writing.Week 5Lesson 9Venn Diagrams Part 1Introduction to comparison writing by discussing elements of a Venn Diagram.Lesson 10Follow a pattern. I have been teaching and tutoring online since 2018 and served as a 3rd Grade classroom teacher and mentor for several years prior. I hold a Master's degree in TESOL, and work as an Adjunct ESL community college instructor. My work experience is varied and I have enjoyed many years working with students who struggle with reading, dyslexia, autism, ADHD, and executive functioning. I am also trained as an Orton Gillingham Classroom Educator, working towards the higher-level Associate certification. I look forward to meeting you.

Homework
Frequency: Available upon requestFeedback: Available upon requestDetails: Homework will be offered as an extension of classroom activities. Homework is not mandatory and will be discussed during the follow-up session. The type of homework will be vocabulary comprehension (to look up the definition of words and to write an effective sentence to demonstrate understanding). Another example will be to unscramble sentences to form a complete thought or structure a paragraph. Learners are expected to bring the same notebook to each session and will record dictation to complete the homework. No printing of worksheets are be required.
