In this 9-week class, students will meet twice a week to discuss our novels, learn new vocabulary words, and practice important grammar and writing skills. We will read Hatchet and The Giver. Both of these novels involve teens overcoming difficult situations. Students will need to have their own copies of these novels. I strive to inspire students' love of reading and writing. The goal is to have fun while learning; I wholeheartedly believe that students learn more when they're enjoying...
Students will learn and understand important grammar skills, vocabulary words, and literary devices. They will also be able to comprehend, discuss, analyze, and write about the novels they read.
I have been a certified English teacher and tutor for over 11 years. I have read and discussed both of these novels with my middle school students and my own sons. Both of these novels are high-interest novels that inspire great discussions among middle schoolers.
Reading homework will be assigned each week. Students will also have a short writing assignment some weeks. These assignments are meant to help them better understand and analyze the novels they read. Students will also have an essay to write in the last 3 weeks of class. We will cover basic essay writing and format in class.
Students will need to purchase their own copies of Hatchet and The Giver. Students will also need paper, a pencil and highlighters to use in class. I will supply some printable sheets for students to use in class and during independent reading.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed on their contributions to class discussions, activities, and writing assignments. I am happy to assign a grade if you need one.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Hatchet is a fast-paced, exciting story about a 13 year old boy who gets stranded in the woods after a plane crash. Some learners may be sensitive to the mention of divorce, feelings of suicide, and a young person hunting animals for food. You can learn more about the book here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/hatchet The Giver is an intriguing story set in a failed utopian society. The book does include some scenes that may be disturbing to sensitive learners. Some scenes are briefly violent while others allude to the death of children and the elderly.
