Description

Class Experience

Students will improve their reading comprehension, their understanding of the elements of a story and how to identify those elements, their understanding of theme and how to identify themes, and their ability to discuss and respond to literature.
I have been leading Middle Grade and Teen book clubs for years as well as teaching literature and writing. My focus is not only reading comprehension and developing an understanding of universal themes, motifs, and character arcs, but also using literature to build our capacity for empathy, understanding, and awareness. I read countless Middle Grade novels in order to select the novels I choose to focus on. Novels that deepen our empathy, that encourage inclusion of marginalized people, that expand our awareness of life experiences that might differ from our own, and books that develop cultural awareness are the novels I tend to be drawn to and that I love to share with youth of all ages.
Weekly reading and optional reading response journal prompts.
Books: The novels to be read and discussed
