Class Experience

Rich Shortbread Cookies are a treat anytime of the year, but especially at Christmas time! Come travel back in time with me to the 1860's to discover what life was like on the American Prairie. Life on the prairie was much different than how we know life today. We can simply walk into our local grocery store to pick up a bag, tin or box of cookies, but for many who lived on the prairie during the 1860's that was not an option. Stores were few and sometimes took an entire day of travel to reach and money needed to be used for necessary supplies. For most cookies were a treat reserved for special days and holidays like Christmas!

If you have taken A Pioneer Christmas: Homemade Butter with me you may use your new skill of butter making prior to this class and use your freshly made butter for your Shortbread Cookies!

NOTE: We will be using the oven during this class, depending on your learner's baking skills it is recommended to have an adult near by when putting cookies into and removing them out of the oven.

IMPORTANT: We will be using butter and flour in this recipe, please be aware if you have a diary and/or gluten allergy.
If you chose to, you may substitute the standard flour for flour of your choice whether it's gluten free or not. HOWEVER, I must note I have ZERO experience using gluten free flour with this recipe.
Learning Goals
My goal is to show children history can be experienced and not only read about in a book. Teaching history while creating and then eating your creation is not only fun, but it helps the learning be a memorable experience.
