Class Experience

Discussing literature can be fun and engaging IF you know the terms being used. This 4 session class will go over the most common literary terms that every English Language Arts class will expect you to know. Using slides, discussions and the socratic seminar strategies, we will look through the lens of classic and contemporary short stories and discuss the following:

Class 1- Plot Structure and Types (Using a plot diagram to detrmine the various parts of an Aristotelean plot)
Class 2 - Characters and Setting (Describe the varied types of characters in a story and explain how setting affects mood)
Class 3 - Theme, Tone and Mood (Explain the difference between mood and tone)
Class 4 - Narrator, Point of View and Genre (Understand major differences between poems, drama, and prose)

Students will learn the difference between various literary terms and use them in discussions.
There will be homework to solidify the concepts learned and even a quiz to check understanding.

I also homeschool my own four children, and I am an education consultant for other homeschooling families. My expertise is in teaching the humanities and literature classes for middle and high school aged kids. I offer classes in the Socratic Seminar style for kids as young as 4th graders. Holding an M.S. in Education and a certification in teaching ESL, I am happy to bring the love of learning to your kids.
My goals, with teaching students, are to make them life long learners and passionate about education. I enjoy teaching poetry, literature, logic and the classics and I hope to pass this love of language on to my students!
