A La Carte Biology Labs: Passive Transport

In this one time lab lesson, you'll be conducting a lab set from my 18 week lab class, we will be focusing on passive transport by conducting two labs. One lab with grapes and gummy bears. You'll also explore processes and vocab.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 11
Beginner Level
In this A La Carte Biology Lab Class, you'll be exploring the cell's way of helping to maintain homeostasis by moving material without energy. You'll explore the different types of passive transport. You'll learn key vocabulary relating to homeostasis, diffusion, osmosis, and facilitated diffusion. We will model and practice osmolarity problems. By the end of the lesson learners will be able to show the movement of water from high to low concentration, and naming the extracellular solution is hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic solutions. Learners will be able to identify the type of passive transport from diagrams and images as either diffusion, osmosis, Facilitated diffusion. Learners will be able to recognize and solve osmolarity problems by naming solutions as hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic solutions. By analyzing problem data, learners will be able to describe the effect on the cell when placed in particular solutions due to the movement of water and solutes. During this self paced class we will be conducting two experiments in this class, one with grapes and the other with an gummy bears. Learners will write hypotheses and collect data per lab. Once your lab is complete , over several days. At the end of the lab, learners will draw conclusions and accept or reject your hypothesis based on data.
Additionally, we will discuss communicating the results from your and using the results to form new hypotheses or predictions

I teach the lesson using Quizizz lessons where you'll be able to follow along and answer questions, or you'll have the option to practice the questions later. This class is prerecorded and there is only one learner per class.

Lesson 1:
Passive Transport
Learn about passive transport including osmosis, diffusion, and facilitated diffusion. Practice osmolarity problems to determine if solutions are hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic. Determine if the cell is swelling and bursting (cytolysis), shrinking (plasmolysis).

Supplies-- 5 grapes , 5 cups, 5 solutions- tap water, bottled water, grape juice, maple syrup, salt, granulated sugar, tape/paper or masking tape, a marker, a ruler

supplies- 3 cups, 3 gummy bears, salt, sugar, and water.

Parental Guidance
This is lab 5 of the 18 labs in my 18 week lab course (both self paced and live). If you have already completed the lab course, then you have already completed this lab. This lesson is meant for learners who only need a few labs of the 18 week course, or need to supplement their lessons. I am providing each lab as an " A La Carte" format incase learners can't do consecutive weeks or only need a few.
