Class Experience

Welcome to "A Drawing a Day: Developing PreWriting Skills Through Step-by-Step Illustrations" In this creative journey, students will embark on an adventure of artistic expression, honing their prewriting skills, building confidence, and developing an understanding of the elements of art.

"A Drawing a Day" class commences with a mindful and serene start, setting the tone for a day filled with creativity and self-expression. The class ritual begins with a focused breath, allowing each child to center themselves in the present moment. Following the breath, a positive affirmation is shared, fostering a sense of confidence and encouragement within each young artist. The atmosphere is further enhanced by a warm welcome poem, carefully designed to create a peaceful rhythm for your child's morning. This mindful initiation not only cultivates a sense of calmness but also establishes a harmonious environment that promotes mindfulness and creativity. By beginning the day with these intentional practices, students are not only prepared for the artistic journey ahead but also equipped with a foundation of mindfulness.

The core of the class lies in the step-by-step illustration process. With the instructor as their support and artistic guide, students will delve into the world of drawing using step-by-step instructions, accompanied by the correct vocabulary for each type of line. This not only enhances their artistic abilities but also introduces them to the language of art, fostering a deeper understanding of the creative process.

As the young artists complete their illustrations, they will be encouraged to infuse their personal touches, making each masterpiece a unique reflection of their imagination. This not only adds a personal flair to their creations but also instills a sense of ownership and pride in their artistic achievements.

Each class period will end with an opportunity for young artists to share their masterpieces with the group! Children will be encouraged to compliment, encourage, and support their classmates.

This class serves as a holistic developmental tool for young students, fostering crucial skills essential for future endeavors like handwriting. The repetitive motion of holding and manipulating drawing tools contributes significantly to the development of hand strength, enhancing the fine motor skills necessary for precise and controlled movements. Through the creation of intricate lines and shapes, students refine their fine motor abilities, laying a robust foundation for the dexterity required in handwriting. Additionally, the visual perception skills cultivated during daily drawing exercises strengthen the connection between hand and eye coordination, honing the precision vital for forming letters and shapes on paper. In essence, this daily artistic practice becomes a multifaceted approach to skill-building, seamlessly integrating the joy of drawing with the foundational elements crucial for the development of proficient handwriting.

Join us on this imaginative journey where each day brings forth a new opportunity for young minds to flourish creatively, all while developing essential prewriting skills. "A Drawing a Day" is more than just a class; it's a celebration of art, expression, and the joy of creating something beautiful every day.

Welcome to The Friendly Forest School!

I come to you with a wealth of knowledge, classroom experience, and a passion for teaching young children though play.

My classes follow a Waldorf-inspired approach that focuses on the holistic development children, ensuring that academic skills are nurtured in an engaging and imaginative manner.

A predictable peaceful rhythm, delightful melodies, American Sign Language, and captivating tales (often set in the Friendly Forest) infuse every lesson, making learning a joyful exploration!I

By embracing the ebb and flow of nature's cycles, my goal is to help children feel grounded, secure, and ready to absorb knowledge with open hearts and curious minds.

ABOUT ME:

My journey began in the summer of 2001 when I had an internship in Early Childhood Education at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. After graduating from Purdue University with my Bachelors Degree, I began working as a social worker and case manager for young children in LaPorte, Indiana.

I then moved to Phoenix, AZ and started my journey in Special Education, working as an in-home therapist for children with Autism and other developmental disabilities. I specialized in building language through American Sign Language, sensory integration and sensory processing disorders, and positive behavior support. In 2005 I was named by the Governor as Arizona's "Caregiver of the Year"!

In 2006, I obtained my Masters Degree in Special Education and began working in a K-6 Self Contained Classroom. During this time I worked to develop an award winning School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support program, based entirely on peace and mindfulness. I was awarded the "You Make a Difference" award by the Osborn School District for my work on this project!

My daughter, Eleanor, was born in 2010 and by 2012 I left the classroom to be a full-time mama. My youngest daughter, Annalise, was born in 2013. During this time I began to adopt Waldorf philosophies at home and began homeschool using Waldorf inspired pedagogy.

In 2017, I started my own Early Childhood Center called "Let's Play Learning". The developmentally appropriate curriculum was based on the view that children learn best when they are actively exploring the natural world and a carefully constructed environment in the company of their caregiver and directed by loving, professionally prepared teachers. I closed my doors at the beginning of the pandemic and began teaching online, which I love!

In my classes I strive to create a culture of peace and mindfulness while teaching academic skills through nature, imaginative play, storytelling, and artistic expression.

I now live with my family just five minutes away from beautiful Lake Michigan.
