1-2 hours per week. Learners should read the assigned chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. There will be one chapter assigned each week until the book is complete.
Assessment
There will be fun quizzes in every class just to test how well learners remember key details from the chapters. The quizzes will not be graded.
Certificate of Completion
Learners will be given a certificate of completion showing that they read the entire book.

Join our magical book study class and dive into Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone! Explore the enchanting world of Hogwarts as we read through exciting chapters, discover new characters, and uncover hidden secrets. With fun activities, creative projects, and lively discussions, you'll experience the magic of the story and become part of the adventure. Perfect for young wizards and witches eager to learn and imagine!

We will have a fun weekly activity after each chapter discussion: 

-get sorted into your Hogwarts house by the sorting hat
-create your wizard/witch name
-concoct your own potions
-quiz battles
& more! 

Once learners have completed 9 classes, they will receive a certificate of completion showing that they read the entire Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone book. Woohoo!

Book Synopsis:

Harry Potter resides with Vernon and Petunia Dursley, his cruel uncle and aunt, and their mischievous son, Dudley. On Harry's eleventh birthday, a half-giant named Rubeus Hagrid reveals that Harry's parents, James and Lily Potter, were wizards when he brings him an entrance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter's road to reconciling with his past and facing his future begins with the captivating novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. 


House Cup Competition: Each week, learners will have optional assignments to complete before the next class. Points will be awarded to houses for completed tasks, and the house with the most points at the end of the term will win the House Cup! The winning house will receive a printable certificate recognizing their achievement.

Chapters 1 & 2 - The Boy Who Lived & The Vanishing Glass
 This week, we explore Vernon Dursley’s introduction, the strange events on his way to work, and the meeting between Dumbledore and McGonagall. We'll reflect on these characters and their significance, inviting learners to engage with reflection questions. We also discover that Harry lives with the Dursleys, who treat him poorly, leading to strange dreams and experiences. I encourage learners to consider the characters' actions and their treatment of Harry.

Lesson 2:
Chapters 3 & 4 - The Letters from No One & The Keepers of Keys
 In Week 2, we summarize the chapters, focusing on the mysterious letters sent to Harry and Hagrid's dramatic arrival. We explore emotions like frustration, curiosity, and humor that readers may experience. Thought-provoking questions prompt reflection on the letter's author and Harry's deep desire to receive them. We also highlight Harry's surprise and curiosity about his newfound magical abilities.

Lesson 3:
Chapters 5 & 6 - Diagon Alley & The Journey From Platform 9 3/4
 I highlight Harry's trip to Diagon Alley with Hagrid, where they visit Gringotts, the Leaky Cauldron, and various shops for Hogwarts supplies. Harry discovers he's wealthy and meets a snobbish wizard. We also learn about wands' significance and the mysterious package Hagrid retrieves. I discuss Harry's return to the Dursleys and his first steps into the magical world, posing questions about the Hogwarts train and Aunt Petunia.

Lesson 4:
Chapters 7 & 8 - The Sorting Hat & The Potions Master
 I summarize the chapter, focusing on the First Years' welcome to Hogwarts, the sorting process, and the traits of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. I read the Sorting Hat's poem and suggest activities like sorting into a Hogwarts house and drawing the Sorting Hat. We also explore the mysterious world of Hogwarts.
