Class Experience

This ongoing class uses multiple strategies to reduce stress and encourage calmness, all in a context of play and movement. I use age-appropriate and light-hearted language, and offer kids space to find motion that works for them. By incorporating my background in child development, therapy, and children's literature, I create progressive muscle relaxation scripts and short stories that encourage movement. As I read each story, I model actions in the story, which encourages children to move along with me or express the story through movement that is comfortable to them.
Here is an outline of each class:
1. A daily check-in to help kids gain body awareness related to stress
2. Deep breathing exercise
3. Motion story (kids move along with the story, acting out parts of the story)
4. Progressive muscle relaxation
5. Deep breathing exercise
6. End-of-class body awareness check-in

Learning Goals

1. Students will learn body awareness related to stress.
2. Children will learn how to use progressive muscle relaxation to calm themselves.
3. Children will practice motion to help encourage calm.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My professional background includes providing individual, group, and family therapy to children. I often worked with children who were anxious and therefore used many sensory-based activities, such as progressive muscle relaxation, breathing, and stretching to help them feel empowered to manage their own emotions. Additionally, I have developed and taught courses to educators about how to help anxious children in their classrooms, and I also teach college-level development/child development.
