Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this flexible schedule class, we will learn about the infamous criminals during America's gangland in the 1930s! Each week, we will look at two American Gangland criminals from the 1930s!

Prerecorded Lessons will consist of some or all of the following: slides and a lecture.

As a flex class, we will not meet live! Each week will be a flexible schedule.

Students will demonstrate their learning through participation in the weekly classroom activities (no live meetings).

The emphasis of activity is through the pedagogical practice of Socratic discussions and engagement.

*This is a flexible schedule class. Each lesson will be delivered via a prerecorded video that will be uploaded into the classroom every week. Each week, students will be assigned an activity to complete related to the prerecorded video. Each student will be required to comment on peer activity postings at least once each week (if possible, I do follow through with single learner enrollments), throughout the course in order to develop a sense of community in the class. The instructor will be available to help and will provide individual feedback throughout the course to student responses, questions, and commentary through the Outschool classroom.

Lessons will consist of some or all of the following: slides, a lecture, and community discussion (via the Outschool classroom), where students can ask questions and express thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes on each topic that occurs through the Outschool classroom posting area. Additionally, other modes will be used for spotlight topics to promote student interaction.

Students will also participate in assigned activities, such as web quests, and will conclude the class by creating their own age-appropriate “gangland” persona.

During this flexible schedule class, over the next four weeks, we will learn about the following mobsters:

Week 1: Al Capone & Charles "Lucky" Luciano
Week 2: Bonnie & Clyde, and, Ma Barker
Week 3: "Baby Face" Nelson & "Machine Gun Kelly" (George Barnes)
Week 4: Robert Stroud "Birdman of Alcatraz", John Dillinger, & (BONUS!) Bugsy Siegel

Parental Guidance
We will be talking about real American gangsters from the 1930s. With this, it is acknowledged that the majority of the people we will be discussing were notorious criminals who committed terrible acts, including murder. Thus, this class will approach the topic with historical accuracy, but, it will be delivered in a kid-friendly manner.
Supply List
No materials will need to be purchased.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
