"A Christmas Carol" Play and Art Activity

Learners (ages 8-12) enjoy holiday acting fun as they read aloud "A Christmas Carol," a play inspired Charles Dickens. Children will dramatize the roles of Scrooge and the cast of this holiday classic and make a Christmas tree mobile.

Projects
1 hour per week. Participants will complete a holiday Christmas tree mobile with required art supplies: a white paper plate, paper (or hole) punch, scissors, yarn. Markers, crayons, or colored pencils can be used to decorate ornaments. Learners may also use glitter or stickers to decorate their ornaments and tree.
Assessment
Class discussion, thumbs up / thumbs down, guided practice to check for understanding, independent oral reading, positive feedback from the teacher

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Learners will have fun, strengthen acting and communication skills, and read aloud the lines of characters from this holiday classic such as Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.  The performers in this class will also practice using vocal variety, facial expressions, and gestures.  This version of Charles Dicken's holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol" was written as a play and adapted for ages 8-13 by Dr. Julie Connor, Ed.D. (TED speaker, author, and the teacher of this class).

The "A Christmas Carol" script will be on PowerPoint slides throughout the class.  Students will choose parts to perform and read aloud lines of different characters from the classic play.  This class is designed for learners (ages 8-12) with these reading skills:

* read aloud with understanding and fluency.
* read aloud lines of characters in a play with vocal variety and expression.
* recall events from a written text.

To complete the art activity, a HOLIDAY MOBILE, learners must be able to:
* use scissors to cut shapes from an ORNAMENT PATTERN (see attachment provided at enrollment of this class).
* use MARKERS, CRAYONS, or COLORED PENCILS to decorate paper ornaments.
* use a PAPER PUNCHER and YARN to connect ornaments to the CHRISTMAS TREE SPIRAL.  (Learners may also use tape.)

Learners may also use glitter, stickers, and other craft materials to decorate their holiday mobiles.

"A Christmas Carol" is a classic holiday novella by Charles Dickens and adapted for children by Dr. Julie Connor, Ed.D. (the teacher of this Outschool class). The Christmas content in this class will remain secular in focus. This play focuses on gratitude and giving thanks to and for people, things, and experiences that make us feel happy and grateful. Parental guidance is required for the use of scissors for cutting while completing this holiday art activity.
Pre-Requisites
Children must be able to: * use scissors to cut a paper plate, paper ornaments, and yarn. * read lines from a play, "A Christmas Carol," on the computer screen. Script will be provided in a PowerPoint presentation
Supply List
ART SUPPLIES for completing the HOLIDAY MOBILE include:
1.  large paper plate 
2.  markers, paint, crayons, or colored pencils
3.  scissors
4.  pencil
5.  paper "ornaments“ pattern (see attachment to this email)
6.  white or colored paper 
7.  yarn or string
8.  paper puncher or hole puncher (optional) OR tape

Learners can use green paint on both sides of a white paper plate and allow it to dry before class.  Learners can also use glitter, stickers, a glue stick, and other art supplies to create the mobile.
