The TV show Our Flag Means Death is being celebrated as an incredible example of diversity and inclusion. Representation matters, and Our Flag Means Death is a pirate-themed romantic comedy that provides a ton of representation! All of this is on purpose. Taika Waititi, star of the show and director of some episodes, posted on Instagram that the show was developed by a diverse group of writers who wanted to depict authentic characters in a funny, poignant love story. This one-time class will be divided into three sections. Section 1: What do we love about the show? What representation do we see? Section 2: Who made the show, and how does diversity behind the scenes lead to better representation in pop culture? Section 3: Let's take a look at our favorite fan art, theories, ships, and more! The class is fast-paced and social. Learners are encouraged to participate with cameras and mics on OR through the chat. (All learners must turn on their cameras at the start of class for verification purposes.) I've been teaching about feminism and pop culture on Outschool since February 2020, and I'm excited to discuss diversity and representation using this great show as a backdrop. Superfans welcome! This class fully affirms all genders and orientations. Neurodivergent students are welcome and valued. I always do my best to teach my classes from an intersectional and anti-racist perspective.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching on Outschool since January 2020. My primary topic is feminism, feminist history, and feminist pop culture analysis. I have been an English professor for more than a decade and have extensive practice leading feminism-related discussions in person and online. My graduate degree is in Creative Nonfiction, and I studied feminist narratives extensively as part of my MFA. I have published numerous essays about feminism, including for publications like Salon, Jezebel, Everyday Feminism, The Shriver Report, and more. I believe in intersectional feminism, which explores the intersections of gender and other forms of oppression, including racism, ableism, classism, and homophobia, among other issues. I am trans-inclusive, non-binary affirming, and aspire to be anti-racist in my teaching.
