9th/10th Grade English Curriculum using the Holocaust Memoir "Night"
In this 9-week course, students will be provided with core curriculum standards similar to that of an English 9/10 classroom by growing in their reading comprehension, paragraph writing, and literary analysis techniques using the Holocaust Memoir "Night".
This course will use the Holocaust memoir "Night" by Eliezer Wiesel to review literary terms and techniques, strengthen paragraph responses, improve vocabulary, and improve reading comprehension and will meet for 55 minutes once per week. A quarter outline is below; a more detailed assignment syllabus will be provided and reviewed during the first class. By the end of the quarter, students should be able to: write a well-developed paragraph and understand thesis statements; understand and be...
∙ Students will improve their reading comprehension, paragraph writing, vocabulary, knowledge of non-fiction works and the memoir genre, grammar, ability to have productive discourse, and critical thinking skills. ∙ This course covers the same core curriculum standards as an English 10 (English 2) classroom. This online course has been adapted from my physical classroom and will adequately prepare students for future English curriculum they may encounter.
I have been a high school English teacher in the physical public school system for several years, and I have taught this particular memoir, "Night", for three years. Students are captivated by this true story of one man's survival of the Holocaust, and I love being able to guide them through this challenging work in a way that is approachable, secular, and engaging. I've had significant success aiding students in their understanding of the text while concurrently developing their worldview, growing in their understanding of literary techniques and reading comprehension, and improving their writing. My classes tend to be discussion-based, and this course will be no different. Students can expect to have weekly class discussions with their peers about the events and literary techniques that take place in the book. I love discussing relevant topics with students and helping them improve their ability to have productive discourse with their peers. If your student is looking for a course that will stretch their understanding of the world around them, loves history, and loves discussing things with others, this is the perfect class for them!
∙ Students will need to purchase the memoir "Night" by Eliezer Wiesel prior to the second class. They will need to purchase the "New Translation by Marion Wiesel" 2006 edition. ∙ A detailed syllabus will be provided one week prior to the first day of class. ∙ If students prefer to keep a paper journal vs. a digital one, students will need to have a composition notebook of some type for their Dialectical Journal assignment. ∙ This course will utilize Google Docs and Google Classroom.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
∙ This course will discuss the Holocaust and all manner of topics that surround it: death, genocide, starvation. ∙ This memoir contains one brief mention of sex/rape. We will not discuss this in detail, but it will be mentioned. ∙ This memoir uses "faith" as a character: the author was imprisoned for his faith, and throughout the memoir, he questions his faith quite a bit. This course will discuss both the role of faith in human trials and the author's doubting of his faith. The discussions of faith will take place from a literary and secular view, but they will be unavoidable in this course. ∙ Due to the mature topic of this course, students who enroll should be mature, able to discuss these concepts from a mature perspective, and open-minded to perspectives different from their own.
