Engage in critical analysis of international law through the lens of the war on terror and the events of 9/11.

Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12
By the end of this course learners will have a greater understanding of the modern history of the American war on terror from it's early threads to present day problems. Learners will understand the complex issues that surround decision making during periods of war as well as the complex challenges of national security versus civil liberties that the government must balance. Further, learners will work to critically analyze these complexities along with the complex issues surrounding U.S. foreign policy and national security.
I am a human rights lawyer who has worked for the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, specializing in war crimes, for over a decade. I have taught on these issues at the Law Faculty at Georgetown University and Uppsala University and have been teaching on Outschool for over four years.
Homework Offered
Throughout the course learners will be assigned readings in addition to the documentary episodes to watch prior to class. There will be occasional homework assignments to prepare debates, consider discussion questions ahead of class and a few optional writing projects. The writing projects will be mandatory if the learner would like to receive a grade in the course.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
If learners wish to have a letter grade, they will be required to complete the optional written assignments as well as participate in the in class debates and discussions.
Grades Offered
Learners will need to have access to the Netflix documentary 'Turning Point: 9/11 and the war on terror'.
This course is for ages 14+ due to the mature themes which the course covers. The documentary covers the events of 9/11 and sometimes shows graphic and scary images and audio recordings of the events. Further the documentary deals with war, alleged torture and violence and should be considered by parents prior to signing up for the course.

It should be noted for parents that Common Sense Media suggests the 9/11 documentary for 15+. The link to their review is here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/turning-point-911-and-the-war-on-terror
Learners will be required to watch the Netflix episodic documentary 'Turning Point: 9/11 and the war on terror' ahead of class for discussion. Further, the U.S. Constitution and the Rome Statute and Geneva Conventions will be provided to learners and we will utilize these sources in class. Finally, articles on the 9/11 events, the prison, civil liberties and the war in Afghanistan will be assigned from the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
